As already stated, TextEdit is the notepad of OS X (although a more powerful notepad that is). For more advanced stuff, TextMate (already recommended) is very nice. A nice free and famous alternative is Bare Bones's TextWrangler. MAC notepad is the best answer for you to enjoy all the best features associated to notepad. Now it serves a dual purpose - as a modest word-processing program, complete with tabs, ruler guides, margin settings, and the ability to use many fonts in a single document - all of which is called 'Rich Text' formatting. To use TextEdit as an HTML editor, turn off the 'Rich Text' features on the Preferences menu. Choose the 'Plain Text' button on the New Document tab.
